The ‘grain corridor’ was agreed upon between the UN, Türkiye, Ukraine, and Russia on July 22nd, as a safe transit zone allowing merchant vessels to call the ports of Chornomorsk, Odesa and Yuzhny for grain exports.

The agreement entered in force on July 27th with the setting up of the Joint Coordination Centre (JCC) in Istanbul, which would coordinate registration and monitoring of the vessels allowed to transit through ‘grain corridor’,  but the day after the agreement was signed, the port of Odesa was subject to a missile attack.

Skytek is monitoring the situation in the Ukrainian ports of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, and noted that until today, no merchant vessels have yet departed through the ‘grain corridor’, and the following facts are of interest:

Port of Chornomorsk

  • The bulk carrier Rojen – IMO: 9754927, shifted from jetty 17 to jetty 3 – General Cargo Jetty in the port of Chornomorsk, moving in between the bulk carriers Key Knight – IMO:9512317 and Glory – IMO:9288473.
  • The Bulk Carrier EMMAKRIS III – IMO:9218387 was reportedly detained in Chornomorisk due to its managing entities being linked to Russian interests

Port of Yuzhny

  • The Bulk Carriers MARAN EXCELLENCE – IMO:9703241 and MARAN ASTRONOMER – IMO:9581239 are seen operating cargo, loading in the port of Yuznhi. Maran Dry Management (MDM) announced on March 08th that they had evacuated their 35 crew from the two ships.

Port of Odesa

  • No movement

Port of Novorossiysk

  • Several vessels flying international flags: YUKSEL KARABEKIR – IMO:9610614, AK DENISA – IMO:7116781, NEW LIBERTY – IMO:9221645, VIGOROUS – IMO:9298521, LADY BOUSHRA – IMO:8607660, were detained in the port of Novorossiysk last week.

Ukrainian Authorities broadcasted navigational warning No.136/22 via the NAVTEX channel of Odesa station. This message establishes a safe passage corridor for the ports of Illichevsk (Chernomorisk), Odesa and Yuzhni from July 27th, 2022 at 0300UTC. Navigation in the designated corridor will be permitted daily between 0300UTC and 1700UTC for merchant ships in convoy and led by a Ukrainian tug.

This implies that sailing is likely to resume soon in these three major ports of the Black Sea. The Ukrainian Authorities’ intention is to have bulk carriers sailing regularly in and out of these three ports, to export an estimated 20 million tonnes of grain from Ukraine.

Skytek’s system is able to monitor in real-time the evolving situation in these three ports. Skytek will closely monitor the formation of the first convoy, and for merchant ships calling to Ukrainian ports, the system can monitor entry, exit, and the ships’ condition while alongside the operating jetty.

The above-mentioned NAVTEX message 136/22 is ingested in Skytek’s system, where automated alerts are possible for the following triggers:

  • ship departure from the jetty
  • ship entering the convoy
  • ship departing territorial waters of Ukraine
