Sanctions Update: Superyachts

A wide range of sanctions has been issued following the recent invasion of Ukraine by Russia Individuals with ties to the Russian regime are being added to EU and OFAC sanctions lists. Their assets are being frozen or are in the process of being frozen.

Mr. Igor Ivanovich Sechin is the CEO of Russian oil giant Rosneft. Both Mr. Igor Ivanovich Sechin and Rosneft are sanctioned under the OFAC Sanctions list. It is reported that the superyacht Amore Vero linked to Mr. Sechin was detained by the French Customs authorities in the French Riviera port, La Ciotat.

The 2013 built, 88m long superyacht Amore Vero under the Cayman Islands flag is currently valued at approximately US $120M.

Mr. Alisher Usmanov is a majority shareholder of Metalloinvest and was placed on the EU sanctions list on 1 March 2022. The superyacht Dilbar reportedly linked to Mr. Usmanov has been detained in Hamburg.

The 2016 built, 156m long vessel is under the Cayman Islands flag. It is valued at approximately US $600M, owned by Navis Marine Ltd – IMO6035713, and managed by Lurssen Yacht Management GMBH – IMO5804048.

Mr. Alexei Mordashov, the main shareholder and chairman of Russian conglomerate Severstal, was added to the EU sanctions list on 1 March. He is reportedly connected with the following two superyachts:

The 2013 built, 68m long Lady M, under Cayman Islands Flag and currently valued at approximately US $40M.

The 2020 built, 142m long superyacht Nord, under the Cayman Islands flag, is currently valued at US $550M.

Mr. Vladimir Putin allegedly owns two superyachts:

  • Superyacht Graceful, having the registered ownership with O’Neil Assets Corp – IMO4147471, and operated by SCF Management Services Cyp – IMO1316943. The yacht is a 2014 built, 80m long, under the Russian flag and valued at approximately US $100M. The vessel left Hamburg, arriving in Kaliningrad on the 9 February. Interestingly, the ship’s position was identified in several locations by AIS satellite providers, indicating location spoofing attempts.

  • Superyacht Chayka, having the registered ownership with Russia Govt. Production Supply – IMO5580657 and operated by SCF Novoship JSC (Novorossiysk Shipping Co) – IMO 0555655. The yacht is a 2009 built, 50m long, under the Russian flag and valued at approximately US $25M.

There are more than 100 superyachts that have ties with Russian interests or fly the Russian flag, which may fall under the rapidly increasing sanctions imposed by US – OFAC, UK – OFSI, EU, and other countries.
